ブルースの分野にブルーンジーが及ぼした影響は絶大で、ブルース史上彼に匹敵する英雄は、マディ・ウォーターズ、B.B.キング、ロバート・ジョンソンらほんの数人しかいない。ミシシッピ生まれでアーカンソー育ちのブルーンジーは、田舎のブルースと都会のジャジーなサウンドを混在させた最初のブルースマンの一人であった。最初の楽器はヴァイオリンで、おじから手ほどきを受けた。20年代に大都市シカゴへ移ってからパパ・チャーリー・ジャクスンを手本にギターを覚えたブルーンジーは、まもなくシティ・ブルースの中心人物として、コロンビア、オーケー、ブルーバードなど、さまざまなレーベルで録音を残すことになる。1938年にジョン・ハモンドがニューヨークのカーネギー・ホールで催した「スピリチュアルズからスウィングまで」というコンサートに、直前に死んだロバート・ジョンソンの代役として出演した話は有名。1950年代に入るとレッドベリー、ジョッシュ・ホワイト、サニー・テリー&ブラウニー・マギーらとともにフォーク・シーンとの関わりを強め、もっぱら白人の聴衆をターゲットにした。ヨーロッパへもたびたび出かけてツアー、レコーディングを行い、ブルースを伝えた。1955年に自叙伝『Big Bill's Blues』を、ベルギーのヤニック・ブルイノフと共著で発表している。
