生まれ故郷テキサスからシカゴに出て、まずロバート・ジュニア・ロックウッド、ジミー・ロジャース、エディ・テイラーらから学んだが、フレディのギター・スタイルはむしろ同世代の友人マジック・サムに似ている。60~66年のキング/フェデラル・レコード時代が彼のベストといわれ、有名なインスト曲「ハイダウェイ」や熱気のあるヴォーカル曲が生まれた。70年にはロック・ミュージシャンのレオン・ラッセルのレーベル、シェルターと契約し、二度目の成功を手にする。しかし、この時期の作品は、コアなファンからはあまり評価されていないようだ。また、フレディ・キングはスタジオ作よりライヴとも言われる。ありがたいことに、壮絶なライヴ映像が多数残っている。
