経歴・特徴

ライス・ミラーという名前でも知られる。ロバート・ジョンソンと南部を放浪し、ハウリン・ウルフにハーモニカを教え、ブルースの伝説的ラジオ番組『キング・ビスケット・タイム』のスターとなった、ブルース界でも最も華麗な人物の一人。ギターのロバート・ロックウッド、ウィリー・ウィルキンズ、ヒューストン・スタックハウスらと南部ブルースを電気化した。40年代の有名レコーディング・アーティストからサニー・ボーイという芸名を無断借用。そのサニー・ボーイI世に負けないくらい才能に恵まれ、神経質なハーモニカ、ビブラートのかかった独特の歌声、痛烈な歌詞を提供した。

1951年から54年にかけてミシシッピー州のトランペット・レーベルに重要な作品をレコーディングしたが、全盛時といえばやはりシカゴのチェッカー(チェスの子会社レーベル)に録音した55年から60年であり、シュールな詞の「Don't Start Me To Talkin'」や「Help Me」などの傑作を残した。ヨーロッパに行ったときには、アニマルズやヤードバーズとも共演。その後南部に戻りそこで亡くなった。
