経歴・特徴

スリム・ハーポは、ルイジアナ州のバトン・ルージュで活動したブルースマン。有名プロデューサー、ジェイ・ミラーの持つルイジアナ州クロウリーのスタジオでスワンプ・ブルースと呼ばれる独特の音楽を創りあげた。ささやくような、くつろいだ歌いっぷり、ほんわかしたハーモニカで成功。代表曲「I'm a King Bee」はローリング・ストーンズ他にカヴァーされている。最初はハーモニカ・スリムの名で各地のクラブで演奏していたが、57年にレコード・デビュー。「I'm a King Bee」の成功のあと、61年に「Rainin' in My Heart」、66年には「Baby Scratch My Back」でヒットをとばした。その結果、ヨーロッパでのレコーディング、ツアーが計画される。しかし、ハーポは、国際的スターの仲間入りをする寸前、心臓発作のため亡くなってしまった。
