父親がギターを弾いたので、エスティスも葉巻の箱を使った手製のギターを練習し、おぼえた。ジャブ・ジョーンズ、ヤンク・レイチェルと組んで演奏し、1929年にヴィクターで初レコーディングを経験。悲壮感溢れる甲高い声が特徴。生涯の大半を極貧のなかで暮らしたが、レコードは随分多く残した。
