ゲイリー・デイヴィス（ブラインド・ゲイリー・デイヴィス）は真のギターの達人だった。信じがたいベース・ランをプレイし、あらゆるキーで独自の奏法を築き上げた彼には、数え切れないくらい多くの後継者がいる。ブラインド・ボーイ・フラーやブラウニー・マギーといったブルースマンのみならず、タジ・マハール、ボブ・ディラン、ヨーマ・コーコネン、デヴィッド・ブロムバーグ、ライ・クーダーなど多くの現代のミュージシャンも直接、または間接的に彼から学んだのである。ブラインド・ブレイクの死後ピードモント・ブルースの最高のプレイヤーだったゲイリー・デイヴィスは、15才頃から、サウス・カロライナのグリーンヴィルでウィリー・ウォーカーの影響を受け、一緒にストリング・バンドでプレイしてギターの腕に磨きをかけた。1920年代にはノース・カロライナ州のダラムという街の通りで演奏して稼ぐようになる。彼は盲目のシンガーだったが、失明の時期ははっきりしない。ＡＲＣ（アメリカン・レコード・カンパニー）のエージェント、Ｊ.Ｂ.ロングがデイヴィスを発見。デイヴィスは1935年の初セッションでブルース数曲を演奏した後、ブルースの録音を拒否し、もっぱら宗教歌だけを歌うようになった。1937年に聖職者の尊称“レヴァランド”をつけ、レヴァランド・ゲイリー・デイヴィスに。1944年にニューヨークに移って、ハーレムの路上で演奏、ときにレコーディングも行なった。60年代のブルース・ブームの到来で、やっと経済的に報われた。死の直前まで演奏活動を続けた。
