経歴・特徴

ニューオーリンズR&Bの父としてその名を把握されているプロフェッサー・ロングヘアは、独特のスタイルでプレイするピアニストであり、歌手だった。その音楽は、ニューオーリンズのさまざまな世代のミュージシャンに影響を与えている。フェスは、子供の頃からニューオーリンズの街頭でダンサーとして小銭をかせいだ。タップのリズムは、彼のプレイに影響を与えたかもしれない。ランパート・ストリートのブルースマンたちを師匠としてピアノを弾き始め、長髪だったことからプロフェッサー・ロングヘアという芸名を使い出す。1949年、初レコーディングをスター・タレントに。カリプソをミックスした彼独特のブルースを64年頃まで、マーキュリー、アトランティック、ワスコ、フェデラル、エブ、ロン、ウォッチに録音していく。彼の「Mardi Gras in New Orleans」はニューオーリンズのお祭りマルディ・グラのシーズンの定番曲となり、「Big Chief」もニューオーリンズ屈指の古典となった。しかし、60年代半ば以降次第に忘れられ、仕事がなくなる。71年にニューオーリンズ・ジャズ&ヘリテッジ・フェスティヴァルで復活。レコーディング、海外公演も行う。74年にフランスのレーベル、バークレーでアルバム『Rock 'n' Roll Gumbo』をレコーディング。ゲイトマウス・ブラウンがバックアップした。1979年に、ドクター・ジョンも参加し、素晴らしいLP『Crawfish Fiesta』を録音したが、遺作となった。
