経歴・特徴

ブルース史上最も多作なレコーディング・アーティストの一人だったライトニン・ホプキンス。1946年から1981年にかけて残した膨大な録音は、弾き語りのカントリー・ブルースからバンド付きのロックンロール的なものまでを含み、彼の芸の広さを示している。テキサス・ブルースの伝統を受け継ぎながらも、独特の技法を磨き、戦後のブルースやロックに多大な影響を与えた。彼のヴォーカルはときには切実感を漂わせ、ときに陽気だった。エレキ・ギター、アコースティック・ギター、両方を弾き、同時代の音楽にも器用にアダプト。また、彼は、即興で自分の体験を心に触れる曲にしてしまう能力にも恵まれていた。戦争のこと、竜巻のこと、飛行機のことなども取り上げ、自在な歌に、しばしば誰にも真似出来ないようなギターの合いの手を入れる。彼はその生々しい音楽、語り部としての才能で、60年代のフォーク・ブルース・リヴァイヴァルの人気者となった。
