レッドベリーは、ブルースマンというより、フォーク・ソングの生きるジュークボックスと見なされていた。「Goodnight Irene」、「Rock Island Line」、「The Midnight Special」といった彼のよく知られている曲は、フォーク歌手に欠かせないレパートリーとなっている。アコーディオン、ハーモニカ、ピアノも演奏できるが、一般的に12弦ギターの名手として知られているレッドベリーは、あらゆる種類のトラディショナル・ソング、リールを吸収し、カントリー・サパー(農村地帯の黒人たちのダンス・パーティ)で歌うソングスターとして育っていった。1906年、シュリーヴポートに居たときに、バレルハウスで聞いたブギウギ・ピアノに惹かれ、ウォーキング・ベースを自分の演奏に取り入れるようになった。1912年にはダラスでブラインド・レモン・ジェファスンと友人になり、ブルースを教わった。レッドベリーは3度刑務所に入ったが、1934年、ルイジアナ州立刑務所に服役中、国会図書館の資料として黒人のフォーク・ソングの収集に来ていた民俗音楽学者アラン・ロマックスのために録音をしたことが人生の転機となる。釈放されたレッドベリーは、ロマックスのアシスタントとしてフォーク・ソング収集の手伝いをはじめ、諸州を旅したのち、ニューヨークでラジオ出演。本格的な歌手としてフォーク界に食い込むと、フォークウェイズを始めとする商業レーベルに大量の録音を残した。49年にフランス・ツアーを行ったが、その年、レッドベリーは筋萎縮性側索硬化症(ルー・ゲーリッグと同じ病気)で亡くなってしまった。
