経歴・特徴

フッカーの録音歴は半世紀にわたり、ブルース、ロック界への影響は絶大なものがある。デルタで継父からギターを習い、メンフィスでゴスペルの経験を積んだのち、デトロイトに落ち着いてレコーディングを開始。48年のデビュー曲「ブギ・チレン」がミリオンセラーとなったほか、「アイム・イン・ザ・ムード」などのヒットを出した。単一コードの執拗な反復による催眠術的なビートが彼のトレードマーク。低く太い唸り声は迫力があり、おどろおどろしい雰囲気を作りだしていた。50年代半ば以降、バンドをバックにしたR&B的レコーディングが増え、70年には白人ブルース・バンドのキャンド・ヒートと共演。70年代後半~80年代はほとんどレコーディングしなかったが、1989年、72歳で『The Healer』をリリース。世界的に脚光を浴び、グラミー賞を獲得した。90年代以降も、ヴァン・モリスン、キース・リチャーズ、ライ・クーダー、カルロス・サンタナ、ロバート・クレイ、ボニー・レイットなどの大物アーティストをゲストに使ったアルバムをコンスタントにリリースし、昔の曲を復活させている。2001年に亡くなるまでブルース界の長老として君臨。フッカーは、偉大な商業的成功を享受することができた数少ないブルースマンのひとりだった。
