経歴・特徴

猛獣のようなブルースマンだったハウリン・ウルフ。ギターはドッカリー・プランテーションでチャーリー・パットンから教わったという。40年代後半にウェスト・メンフィスに出て、ギターのウィリー・ジョンソン、ピアノのディストラクション(破壊屋)といったメンバーから成るバンドを結成。その後ウェスト・メンフィスのラジオ局KWEMでDJ兼、演奏者となる。サム・フィリップスが所有するメンフィス・レコーディング・サーヴィスで初レコーディング。フィリップスはウルフのテープをシカゴのチェス・レコードに送った。また、同じ頃RPMのタレント・スカウトをしていたアイク・ターナーがウルフの再レコーディングを行い、そのテープをビハリ兄弟に送った。その結果、同じような曲がチェス、RPM両社から発売されてしまった。チェスとビハリ兄弟は裁判に訴え、熾烈な争奪戦に。最終的にはチェスがウルフを、ビハリが新人のロスコー・ゴードンを取ることで和解し、ウルフはシカゴへ移住。以後ウルフは、片腕的存在ヒューバート・サムリンのギターをバックに、チェスで「スモークスタック・ライトニン」「キリング・フロア」「イーヴル」など名曲を残し、死ぬ直前まで素晴らしいコンサートを続けた。
