経歴・特徴

録音を残した中では最も古い黒人歌手、ヘンリー・トーマスは、アメリカ黒人の最初の音楽、つまりブルースの原型を提示している。トーマスはギターをかき鳴らしながら歌い、曲によっては葦で作った「クウィル」と呼ばれるパンパイプを吹いた。国内を放浪しながら、メディシン・ショウで歌うソングスターだった彼は、1927年から29年の間にシカゴでヴォカリオン・レーベルに23曲をレコーディングした。彼の遺物には、バラッド、ラグタイム、多くのミュージシャンに取り上げられた「Fishing Blues」が含まれる。
