経歴・特徴

ボビー・ブランドは60年代にシンガーとして絶頂期を迎えたが、白人ファンにはアピールせず、聴衆はもっぱら黒人に限られていた。だが、50年代から彼ほど多くR&B、ポップス両チャートでヒットを連発したブルースのスターはいないのだ。自身が楽器演奏をするわけではないし、ハンサムというわけでもなかったが、テキサス産のビッグ・バンドをバックに、豪快さと繊細さを巧みに使い分け、ふくよかなセクシーさを表わしてみせた。ゴスペル仕込みのそのヴォーカルはどんな黒人女性の心もとろけさせた。独自の句読法(しわがれ声のスコール)を開発したブランドのすばらしい才能、自信たっぷりにバラードを囁く姿は、20年間在籍したデューク発表のレコードのなかにある。
