経歴・特徴

ジョージア州アトランタの歌手ブラインド・ウィリー・マクテルは、ブラインド・サミー、ジョージア・ビル、バレルハウス・サミー、ピッグン・ホイッスル・レッドなどの変名を使っていくつものレーベルに録音を残している。12弦ギターの卓越した演奏ぶり、独特の甘い声で知られ、有名な自作曲(オールマン・ブラザーズ・バンドがカヴァーした「Statesboro Blues」)、バラッド(「Delia」)、ラグ、霊歌などを含む多彩なレパートリーを誇っていた。同エリアのカーリー・ウィーヴァーと長年コンビを組んだ。生まれた時からほとんど目が見えなかったが、ホテルまで詳細に道を教えてジョン・ロマックスを驚かせただとか、吠える犬をピストルで撃っただとか、逸話が数多くある。メイコンの州立盲学校、ニューヨークの盲学校で勉強後、アトランタに戻ってビクターに初レコーディングをした。ビクターで「Statesboro Blues」「Dark Night Blues」などを録音した彼は、コロムビア、デッカにもレコーディング。1940年には国会図書館用録音もした。アトランティック、リーガルに吹き込んだ後、1956年、ブルースヴィルに最終レコーディング。1959年に脳出血で亡くなったが、晩年はほとんど注目されなかった。ボブ・ディランはこの偉大なブルース歌手に敬意を表し、「いまブラインド・ウィリー・マクテルのようにブルースを歌える者は誰もいない」と歌った。
