経歴・特徴

ブラインド(盲目の)・ブレイクは1920年代の東海岸における最も傑出したラグタイム・ブルース・ギタリストだった。彼の軽快なピッキングは、荒削りでディープなデルタ・ブルースとはまた違うものだった。ブレイクが時折みせる低音弦の凄い奏法。右手親指はドダン、ドダンといった風にシンコペーションしたリズムを生み出す。誰にも真似の出来ないそのビートにのって、上で跳ね回るメロディ。彼の驚異的なテクニックは、ブラインド・ボーイ・フラーゲイリー・デイヴィス、バディ・モス等、東部のギタリストに多大な影響を与えた。初録音は1926年夏。ブラインド・レモン・ジェファスンと並んでパラマウントの看板アーティストに。32年6月までの6年間に自己名義の録音を80曲以上残した。この名人の華麗なピッキングは、「Blind Arthur's Breakdown」や「Skeedle Loo Doo Blues」「Southern Rag」「Righteous Blues」などで聴くことができる。ジャズのクラリネット奏者ジョニー・ドッズと共演した録音(「Southbound Rag」「Hot Potatoes」「C.C. Pill Blues」)もあれば、ピアニストとのデュエットでも名演(「Hastings Street」)を残し、スター歌手のマ・レイニーやパパ・チャーリー・ジャクスン、レオラ・B・ウィルスンなどの伴奏でも活躍、とその音楽性は幅広い。
