同名のB.B.と並んで、ロック・アーティストに最も影響力があったギタリスト。彼のスタイルはジミ・ヘンドリックス、エリック・クラプトン、スティーヴィー・レイ・ヴォーンに研究され、模倣された。若い頃にブルドーザーを運転していた身長195センチ、体重110キロのこの大男は左利きで、ギブソンのフライングVを右利き用に弦を張ったまま逆さにして弾いていた。そして、力自慢のようなベンドがトレード・マークだった。1953年にパロットに初録音。59~63年にボビンとキングから活気に満ちたいくつかのシングルをリリースした。彼が本当の意味でスタイルを確立したのは、66年にスタックスと契約してからだった。ブッカーT&MGズとメンフィス・ホーンズをバックに最高のアルバム『ボーン・アンダー・ア・バッド・サイン』が吹き込まれた。ホーンなしのバンドをバックにした68年のライヴ盤『ブルース・パワー~ライヴ・ワイア』も傑作。
